Tracy Drake, CEO of Ohio's Columbiana County Port Authority, announced this week that a key permit has been approved for a plant to turn coal into liquid fuel. It is expected to create thousands of jobs.

The state Environmental Protection Agency approved an air-quality permit for Baard Energy of Vancouver, Washington. It was the last of three major permits needed to start the project.

The project is expected to bring up to $6 billion in construction costs into the county over five years. That includes the creation of thousands of construction jobs.

The project will need about 225 full-time workers with at least an associate degree.

The nearby towns of Wellsville and East Liverpool were hit hard years ago when the area’s pottery industry collapsed.
