As it looks to fight rising fuel costs, SoCal Edison is looking to raise its rates 25-30%.
Serving over five-million customers throughout Southern California, Edison has until December to see if the California Public Utilities Commission will approve or reject its request.
Edison had its fuel costs, mainly natural gas, nearly double since 2007. The company also needs to replace old power lines, and requires capital to do so.
In a time when the company reported the largest of amount of customers falling behind on payments, many feel SoCal Edison is trying to cover its losses.
The company contends the rate increase will really only affect those who use large amounts of power. Still, electricity has become a necessity, and customers are forced to pay the bill, whatever the amount, or it’s lights out.
