This position is part of the Duke Energy Midwest Transmission Protection & Controls Engineering group in Plainfield, IN. This work group is responsible for the engineering and design of new and existing distribution and transmission substations from 4kV through 345kV. Design projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations, to that of complete new substations. The position requires the individual to be able to manage work associated with multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs. The individual will utilize a variety of tools and techniques in order to complete assigned engineering design, including Aspen Oneliner, Aspen Relay Database, Maximo, relay-specific programming software, and Microsoft Office products.
This is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.
Actively develop knowledge of and apply fundamental power system protection concepts, practices and procedures; Conduct engineering and related studies; complete routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; Contribute to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; deal with changing priorities and differing situations and make decisions that may affect the work of the team; Plan, coordinate and monitor the progress and quality of assigned projects to meet the required schedule; Own the project conceptual design, protection schemes, bills of material, protection settings, NERC compliance program evidence and technical field support; Work assignments in a manner consistent with the Duke Energy Safety Manual, as well as Federal, State, and local laws and regulations; Develop positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities; Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills; Maintain accurate records and files.
Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles; Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations; Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds; Able to drive company vehicle to job site and external meetings; Good written and oral communication skills
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree; Minimum of 2 years engineering experience;
Knowledge of power system equipment, its application, its capability and methods for protecting it;
Knowledge of power system analysis, including modeling, fault study and protection coordination;
Experience engineering Protection & Control systems for use in power transmission and distribution substations;
Knowledge of NERC reliability standards for Critical Infrastructure Protection and Operations & Planning, including PRC-001, -006, -023, -25;
Familiarity with protection system components, such as relays, carrier sets, RTU, instrument transformers, and DC systems;
Increasingly proficient in principles of project management;
Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam (FE)
