Job Description

Located at our office in Santa Clara, CA or Van Buren Twp., Michigan,

this exciting, challenging and fast moving role gives a highly

motivated expert Power Electronics Engineer the responsibility for

liaising with customers, leading and supporting projects and

designing, analyzing and signing off electrical circuits and systems

which are incorporated in our customers innovative product lines.

These cover, but not limited to, Motor Inverters, DC/DC Converters and

Wired and Wireless Chargers for EV and PHEV vehicles and other

electric drive systems. The primary duties of this position include:

* As part of a global team, assist with understanding customer

needs, developing competitive offerings and be responsible for

delivering projects that exceed their expectations

* Define the project approach using Ricardos or our customers

product development process to achieve the timing, quality and

costs for the project

* Generation of clear requirements and specifications of the product

* Working in a team of engineers, technicians and suppliers, take

responsibility for the execution and development of those designs

to automotive or other quality and safety requirements

* Design, analyze and schedule the implementation of tasks on a

cost-effective basis

* Take responsibility for prototype validation testing and product

qualification testing, with respect to schedule and problem

resolution

* Analyze malfunctioning electrical and electro-mechanical circuits

or systems to assess root cause and subsequent cost effective

resolutions

* Participate in Competitive Analysis Benchmarking exercises to

determine new product requirements and new approaches

* Document activities to thoroughly explain conceptual thoughts,

conditions, restrictions, analysis, synthesis and test results

that serve to record and justify circuit design and test results

as specified by Ricardo processes

* Understand and practice laboratory procedures for the safe and

efficient use of electronic instrumentation, electrical power,

rotating electrical machinery, and general laboratory cleanliness

* Responsible for the activities of any non-exempt personnel that

may report to you including training, input for performance

appraisals, promotion recommendations, but not including salary

administration

* Identify and promote new methodologies, processes and technologies

to bring efficiency to the development process

* Support other Ricardo teams and / or the customer with the

integration of these products into the application as required

depending on project scope

* Some travel required. Typically, less than 10%

Position Requirements:

* Self-motivated, team working, hands-on, experienced power

electronics engineer excited by the prospect of joining Ricardo to

work with both the big and the new vehicle OEMs, new start-ups,

world leading Tier 1 suppliers and with customers in stealth mode

wanting to disrupt the industry

* 8 years of related experience with a B.S. Degree (M.S. Degree /

PhD preferred) in Electrical Engineering or Power Electronics

* Knowledge of U.L., C.S.A., and CE Standards

* The ability to work with and in some cases lead, cross functional

teams consisting of Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers,

Manufacturing Engineers and Technicians

* Experience of leading prototype manufacture in-house and via

suppliers on time and to appropriate quality and cost requirements

* Experience of taking designs right though to production, including

high-volume automotive quality systems

* Knowledge of electrical and electro-mechanical circuits and

systems in all three of the disciplines of analog, digital, and

power using simulation tools and procedures essential

* Demonstrable expert knowledge in electrical power devices such as:

IGBT s, Switchmode Power Supplies, Bus Structures and Power

Capacitors used in motor inverters, DC/DC converters and charging

systems covering concept and detail design, right through to

production

* Hands-on expert experience of system level design, block-level

architecture, schematic capture, data-flow analysis, power

analysis, thermal analysis, PCB design and layout supervision,

low-power design, high-speed signal design and test procedure

development

* Experience with digital motor control software development

covering control principals of adjustable speed drive and power

converter designs, including ability to innovate in this area

* Demonstrated core expertise in real-time, embedded systems and

control platforms at automotive level

* Familiarity and confidence with appropriate engineering tools

essential such as Simplorer, AnSYS Maxwell/Q3d, Matlab Simulink,

PSIM and/or PSCAD, DSPACE, OPAL-RT and/or RTDS, etc, demonstrable

in power converter, motor drive and embedded systems

* Familiar with analyzing EMC susceptibility and emissions from

power conversion systems and sub-systems

* Familiar with EMC 61800-5-1 mitigation principals and EMC

standards, appropriate agency requirements such as UL508 and

EN61800-3, 61800-5 product specific standards

* Knowledge of the control principals for grid tied converter and/or

active front end rectifier design with an awareness of electric

vehicle and battery architecture

* Knowledge of wide band gap devices such as GaN and SiC

semiconductor chemistries and application experience

* Experience with FPGA logic programming and synthesis and their

application

* Strong desire to achieve success and excellence in all you do
