This is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this entry level solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. They have knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.
This position is part of the Substation Engineering group located in Duke Energys regional headquarters in downtown Cincinnati, Oh. This work group is responsible for the design of new and existing distribution and transmission substations from 4kV through 345kV in Ohio and Kentucky. Projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations, to the complete design of new substations. The position requires the individual to be able to manage work between multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs. The individual will utilize a variety of tools and techniques in order to complete an engineering design, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. Final product is an engineering release package consisting of pertinent drawings, permits, bills of material, etc.
The responsibilities of this position include:
Engineer substations for assigned projects.
Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.
Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.
Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity.
Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Office environment with frequent site visits, in various weather conditions.
May need to work in confined spaces and/or in noisy work areas. Exposure to potential hazards is commonplace.
Exposure to hazards is commonplace. Hazardous areas routinely encountered include open ditches, heavy machinery, excessive noise, vehicle traffic and high voltage equipment.
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Bachelor of Science Electrical Engineering.
Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
Understanding of basic principles of project management.
Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations.
Demonstrated ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, partners, customers, and the public by adapting to various personality styles in a professional manner.
Experience in the Electric Utility Industry.
Experience in electric utility substation design.
Experience with Microsoft Office
Experience with AutoCAD 2010 or newer
Experience with (Autodesk) Inventor
Able to drive personal vehicle or company vehicle.
Must have the ability to walk extended distances on various types of terrain.
Must have the overall stamina and ability to perform moderate physical activity.
Must have the ability to audibly and visually identify the presence of a danger or hazard.
Support for Delivery Operations during emergency storm restoration, which could require extended hours working outdoors in any weather condition.
