Pasadena, CA — EnergyCrossing, which specializes in posting energy industry jobs, has noted its agreement with a report from environmental and labor groups which says that a $100 billion US government investment over two years could create two million green jobs in various industrial sectors. Leo Gerard, international president of the United Steelworkers, said that an energy-efficient green economy creates jobs and could create jobs in America in short order. The report also states that clean energy could create 43,000 jobs in Missouri and about 86,000 jobs in Pennsylvania.
''I totally agree with the report that an energy-efficient economy always breeds jobs,'' says Harrison Barnes, CEO and founder of EnergyCrossing. ''In fact, EnergyCrossing started posting green jobs long ago and has recently increased its green job count significantly.''
The investment proposal, detailed in a report from the Department of Economics and the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, would reportedly create new opportunities for everyone from steelworkers to software designers. The report further states that the retrofitting of old, energy-inefficient buildings would create jobs for steelworkers, glassmakers, and those who manufacture heating and cooling systems (i.e., HVAC workers). Many of the proposed new jobs would be in the construction industry, which has lost about 800,000 jobs in the last two years. The new study also reveals that developing new energy sources such as wind, solar, and biofuels could not only be beneficial from an environmental point of view but instrumental in cutting the national unemployment rate from 5.7% to 4.4%.
''A clear shift to clean energy will put more unemployed people to work and rejuvenate our economy at a time when many Americans are hurting,'' says Barnes. ''The plan is also supposed to create about four times more jobs per dollar spent than spending the same within the oil industry, and 20% more jobs than increasing spending on household consumption.''
Barnes adds, ''Since the beginning of the recession this year, EnergyCrossing has been concentrating on getting more and more green jobs, and the response has been huge. The employment situation in America has been pathetic over the past year, so it gives us great satisfaction when we can help someone land a job.''
